A Fresh Start with Homeschooling

Writer: Kim HKim H

What makes the thought of sending your kids to school feel heavy?  Is it the early mornings? Or the relentless homework grind? Or the nagging sense that something just isn’t working?  Or maybe you are just really tired of packing lunches every day?!  Guess what? You don’t have to send them back. Not next year. Not on Monday. Not ever.

You don’t have to send them back. Not next year. Not on Monday. Not ever.

Homeschooling isn’t just an academic choice; it’s a lifestyle choice.  One that fosters authentic connection and learning.  One that allows you to build a legacy of togetherness and growth. The first step? A clean break. Withdraw them from school and start fresh. It’s easier than you think, and it can start right now.

Embrace the Transition & Redefine Education

Homeschooling doesn’t have to look like school at home. In fact, it really should never look that way! There’s no need to set up a mini-classroom in your kitchen or recreate a rigid 6 hour daily schedule. Instead, give yourself and your kids time to decompress. Spend a few weeks reconnecting as a family.  (In the homeschool world, we call this “deschooling” and consider it an essential practice for those transitioning from a traditional school setting.)

Here are a few ideas to help ease into this new chapter and deschool as a family.  Looking for more on WHY deschooling matters?  Check out our post on Deschooling.

  1. Dive into a Good Book: Choose a family-friendly read-aloud and enjoy it together. Share the joy of storytelling and spark meaningful conversations. Here are some of our favorites!

  2. Get Outside: Take a walk. Visit a local park. Go to the beach. You will be amazed at how great you feel and how well your kids behave after some quality time outside.

  3. Learn Through Living: Watch a documentary, cook a new recipe together, or tackle a DIY project. Everyday activities are where you will find the REAL education happening.

  4. Celebrate Freedom: Revel in the fact that learning is no longer confined to a desk. Bake cookies at 11 a.m. Take a spontaneous field trip. Let curiosity lead the way to great adventure.

Build at Your Own Pace

The beauty of homeschooling is that it’s as flexible as you need it to be. Once you’ve taken some time to settle in, start exploring curriculum options. Research what aligns with your family’s values, interests, and learning styles. There’s no rush. You’re not on anyone else’s timeline.

Remember, homeschooling is as much about the journey as the destination. You’ll learn alongside your children, adapt as you go, and find a rhythm that works for your family.

Change Your Family. Change Your Legacy.

Choosing to homeschool is a personal choice and every person you meet will give you a different reason why it was the best choice for their family.  Regardless of your reasoning, I think we all can agree that it’s really about reclaiming your family’s time, values, and priorities. It’s an opportunity to create a learning environment that celebrates your child(ren)’s unique strengths and interests. It’s a chance to build deeper relationships and to model lifelong learning.

So, take that first step. Withdraw them. Embrace the messiness and joy of starting something new. You don’t have to send them back. Instead, you can chart a new course for your family—one filled with wonder, growth, and connection. Your children will thank you for it, and you’ll look back and wonder why you didn’t start sooner.

Change your family. Change your legacy. It starts today.
