Our Favorite Family Read Aloud Stories

Ask anyone on our team for their top ten family read aloud stories and you’ll get a list of one hundred!  Narrowing down this list was quite the challenge, but we’re thrilled to share these family read-aloud gems that have brought us so much joy. Perfect for gathering around and enjoying together, each of these stories offers adventure, heart, and timeless lessons. Here they are, in no particular order:

1. Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater


Follow the whimsical story of Mr. Popper, a house painter who unexpectedly becomes the caretaker of a troupe of charming penguins.


  • Why We Love It: This classic story is funny and heartfelt, making it wonderful first read aloud for any age.  (And bonus - the movie is equally hilarious and a good introduction to the concept that although the movie is enjoyable, the book is always better!) 


2. The BFG by Roald Dahl


Join Sophie as she befriends the Big Friendly Giant and embarks on a mission to stop other giants from wreaking havoc on the human world.


  • Why We Love It: Roald Dahl's stories make the world more fun.  His stories are filled with playful language and boundless imagination.  The BFG is just one of many Dahl stories to captivate readers of all ages.


3. The Green Ember by S.D. Smith


This action-packed tale follows Heather and Picket, two rabbits swept into a world of adventure, courage, and betrayal.


  • Why We Love It: This story is unique in so many ways and really keeps you on the edge of your seat.  Along with the many unexpected twists and turns, this story can bring your family deep into discussion about topics of legacy and hope and what it truly means to be brave.


4. The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall


Meet the Penderwick sisters as they navigate a summer filled with mischief, friendship, and heartfelt family moments.


  • Why We Love It: The warm, nostalgic tone makes this story beloved by all who read it.  The Penderwick sisters find a way into your heart as you read about their adventures. It is an endearing read for families who appreciate down-to-earth storytelling.


5. My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett


Follow young Elmer Elevator as he sets off to rescue a baby dragon in this whimsical and creative adventure.


  • Why We Love It: Another great option for a first family read-aloud, especially for younger listeners. The short chapters make it easy to read in bite-sized pieces, while the imaginative storyline keeps everyone engaged. 6. Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo


This heartwarming story of Opal and her lovable mutt, Winn-Dixie, digs deep into the ideas of friendship, forgiveness, and community.


  • Why We Love It: The blend of humor and poignancy make Kate DiCamillo’s tale a touching read for all ages.  You'll laugh out loud in some moments and choke up with emotion at others.  (Another great movie, for those looking!)


7. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis


Enter the enchanting land of Narnia, where four siblings discover a world of wonder, confront an evil witch, and ally with Aslan, a noble lion.


  • Why We Love It: Narnia can be enjoyed at the surface level for its thrilling adventure and fun storytelling.  Or you can take it to its allegorical depths, sparking incredible conversations with your kids about courage, faith, leadership, forgiveness, and so much more.


8. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett


Discover the transformative power of friendship and nature as Mary Lennox revitalizes a hidden garden and her own heart.


  • Why We Love It: This classic tale weaves beauty and redemption into a story rich in imagery and character development. Readers will walk away with an appreciation for the simple, yet profound, joys of life.

  • Why We Love It: Who doesn’t love Matilda?  She’s the girl we all love!  Dahl’s clever humor and empowering message make this story a joy for both kids and adults.


Ok - a few more!  I mean, you knew we weren’t REALLY going to keep it to 10, right?

11. Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White


This timeless tale of friendship follows Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider as they work together to save Wilbur from the butcher.


  • Why We Love It: Another timeless classic on our list.  It's a must-read for every family and a wonderful option for a first read-aloud for families with young children.  I mean, who doesn’t love Wilbur and Charlotte and their beautiful story of devotion and friendship?!


12. The Good Master by Kate Seredy


Step into the Hungarian countryside with Jancsi and his spirited cousin Kate and join in their adventures filled with joy, mischief, and heartwarming lessons.


  • Why We Love It: The Good Master is a beautiful blend of adventure, family bonds, and cultural heritage. The characters are lovable, the humor is charming, and the story imparts values of kindness, hard work, and appreciation for simple joys. This is a book that will end long before you are ready to say goodbye.
